A Glimpse into My Board Game Arena Sessions: Clans of Caledonia, Hanamikoji, and More

I took a picture of the games I’m in the middle of playing on Board Game Arena. It’s just a quick look at what I’m up to right now. I spend a lot of time on my computer, for both work and fun, and I always have a tab open for Board Game Arena. When it’s my turn in a game, a little triangle lights up on the tab. Seeing that makes me happy, and I click over to make my move.

Recently, I showed my younger daughter, Chen Rui, how to play Hanamikoji on Board Game Arena. It’s a really nice game. There are only four simple choices to make each round, but they really make you stop and think hard! It can be quite tough to decide. We started with the regular game, but we also tried some different ways to play it. The main rules stay the same, but the four action tiles change. Hanamikoji has become a well-loved modern game, and I think it truly deserves that title.

Caylus is often called the first game where you place workers. It was very popular when it first came out. It helped make the idea of placing workers a common thing in board games. I have a physical copy of this game, and it’s still around even though I haven’t played it in a long time. It’s an important game in the history of modern board games.

Playing this game takes a good amount of time when you play it turn by turn online. I made a few silly mistakes, like taking a spot to trade money and cloth for a favor, and then forgetting that I wouldn’t actually get that cloth until later when a building was used. It’s enjoyable to play an older game again. This one is from 2005.

I almost played Clans of Caledonia when I was visiting my hometown, and now I’ve actually played it online with some different friends. This is another game that I haven’t played in a while, so I had to learn everything all over again. When I play games like this, I often reread my own blog posts about them. It helps me get a quick reminder and a general idea of how to play. I hope it helps me avoid making the same mistakes I did before.

I chose the MacKenzie clan, which is good at making whiskey. I made some extra money by brewing whiskey, and if I kept it stored and aged, I could earn even more money.

There are tasks to complete, and buying and selling goods changes their prices.

I played A Feast for Odin. I had many cards that gave me special abilities, but I didn’t know how to use them very well. They seemed to only be helpful in very specific situations. I ended up not playing most of them, and for some, I only played them to get a few points.

I played Molly House. This game is quite tricky to learn because the rules are a bit unusual. Even though I’ve played it before, I still don’t fully understand it. The first game we played ended very quickly with these results. We didn’t handle the gossip pile correctly, and there was a big crackdown. Everyone lost.

When you chat on Board Game Arena, they are very careful about the words you use and will warn you if you say anything that might be considered inappropriate. So, we couldn’t make jokes about these results, which people who know about current Malaysian politics might find funny.

I thought I was getting pretty good at Regicide. I’m not paying for a membership on Board Game Arena right now, but this game is free to play, so I sometimes play it by myself. I feel like I know all the important strategies and I think I use them well. Sometimes I win easily and feel confident. But other times, I go through a stretch of losing. This is such a fantastic game! Regicide Legacy is coming to Malaysia soon, and I’m really looking forward to that.
