Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3 See Renewed Popularity Following New Game Announcement

The new Divinity game from Larian Studios has become a major topic of discussion since its debut at The Game Awards 2025. Even though there were some initial worries about the use of generative AI and the studio’s subsequent decision to change direction, the excitement for this upcoming role-playing game remains strong. This buzz has actually caused a noticeable increase in players returning to the studio’s previous hits. Both the 2023 release Baldur’s Gate 3 and the earlier title Divinity: Original Sin 2 are seeing a fresh wave of popularity.

While Baldur’s Gate 3 has maintained a solid player base over the last two years, observers noted on January 20th that it continues to perform very well. It holds its own even against brand new game launches and massive online titles like Arc Raiders. Swen Vincke, the head of Larian Studios who is also leading the development of the new Divinity game, quickly commented on the lasting appeal of their previous two major releases.

It is important to note that Vincke was discussing total sales figures for both games. These numbers are not fully reflected by the current concurrent player counts we are seeing right now. Additionally, we only have direct access to data from the Steam platform. However, with Larian’s catalog seeing recent sales across all available platforms and Divinity: Original Sin 2 receiving a native version for the Nintendo Switch 2 along with upgrades for current-generation consoles, it is easy to believe that many players are finally starting these massive RPGs now.

The developer also stated that the previous Divinity game has had its best month since its original launch back in 2017. This might be true when looking at the complete picture, but it does not align perfectly with the all-time chart data from SteamDB. The chart shows a different story regarding peak activity.

The highest number of concurrent players for Divinity: Original Sin 2 after its launch occurred in March 2020. This was right at the beginning of the Covid pandemic, when the game reached 30,882 concurrent players. This current month, however, has reached the best numbers since that time, hitting 27,409 concurrent players.

As for Baldur’s Gate 3, its best moments after launch happened in January 2024 with 297,492 players and in April 2025 with 169,267 players. Currently, the game sits at 127,254 concurrent players on Steam. Again, the total number across all platforms could be much higher than these specific figures.

As a side note, Larian has also stated that the studio will certainly consider a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Divinity. They are also looking into supporting the Steam Deck again after the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 on Valve’s handheld PC.
