Now, more than ten years later, Nintendo has kept that promise. As shown in today’s

, when you make your characters, called Miis, in the new game, you can pick from three choices for who they are: male, female, or non-binary. You can also choose who they like from the same list. This means you can make characters who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, or straight. And because it’s Tomodachi Life, you also get to pick how their faces look, their body shape, their personality, and even the funny computer voices they’ll use.

Once your Miis are ready to move into their new island home, things mostly look the same as before. You don’t control the Miis directly. Instead, you help them grow by giving them food, presents, and making new neighbors for them to meet and become friends with. You can also help these friends meet other friends, acting like a powerful matchmaker to create a web of social connections that aren’t always perfect.

Some things might happen when you’re not playing the game, like your Mii meeting someone they really like. You can keep up with everything by checking the island’s News Channel. You can also buy clothes for your Miis at the clothing store, food from the supermarket, apartment decorations from the Renovation Centre, and even stranger things, like a lion, from the market stall. There’s also a photo studio if you want to take some silly pictures.

The people living on Tomodachi Life island might also ask you to make improvements to the island sometimes. You can decorate the outdoor areas with all sorts of things, from fences and picnic tables to new houses and different types of land, all bought from the Island Design Centre. If you want to have a bit more say in your Miis’ lives, you can give them special habits or traits, or drop them off at interesting spots so they can, for example, wiggle around in a sprinkler. It all looks just as wonderfully goofy as the last game, and that’s before we even talk about the Studio Workshop where you can draw a flat, 2D pet for your residents, or change food, clothes, the TV channels they watch, and more. And yes, there’s romance, awkward love triangles, and getting married. You can even have up to nine Miis living together in one house.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream comes out for Switch and Switch 2 on April 16th, but we don’t know yet if there will be any special improvements just for the Switch 2.
