A recent report from the Game Developers Conference (GDC) has revealed some difficult news for people working in the video game industry. The study shows that one out of every three workers in the United States has lost their job over the past two years. This information paints a serious picture of the current job market for game developers.
The data comes from the 2026 State of the Game Industry Report. This survey gathered answers from more than 2,300 people. The group included developers, producers, marketing staff, company executives, and investors. The report found that 33% of the people who answered from the United States had been laid off in the last 24 months.
When looking at the numbers for workers in other countries, the situation was still difficult. About 28% of all people surveyed said they had been laid off during the same time period. This means more than a quarter of the total workforce lost their jobs.
