This new partnership shows how far Cape Town Backgammon has come, thanks to all the hard work from its members.
Ten Years of Fun, Friends, and Games
Cape Town Backgammon started in June 2013. Two brothers simply wanted a friendly place for people to play backgammon in Cape Town. What began as small get-togethers has grown over the years into a well-known backgammon group.
In the last ten years, the club has:
- Held live games in Cape Town.
- Organized online leagues, bringing players together from different areas.
- Given out yearly awards for good playing, getting better, and helping the club.
- Helped local players go to big games around the world.
A big highlight was when Doron Claxton, who the club supported, made it to the final of the Backgammon World Championships in Monte Carlo in 2025. This was a huge deal for backgammon in South Africa.
Joining MSSA and the Cape Town Open 2026
Joining MSSA is a big step. It means Cape Town Backgammon is now part of the national system, with clear rules and ways for players to grow.
The first major event under this new partnership will be the Cape Town Open, happening from February 20–22, 2026. MSSA has officially said it’s a Regional Championship.
Besides the main Open group, special awards will be given to the best players in these groups:
- Open
- Female
- Youth (under 25)
- Junior (under 18)
This event aims to show off great playing and also highlight that backgammon is a game for everyone, helping people learn and get better.
Making the Game Bigger — Especially in Schools
A main goal for Cape Town Backgammon is to get more people playing, especially younger folks. The club is working hard to bring backgammon into schools in Cape Town and nearby areas. It’s a great way to help kids learn:
- How to think ahead.
- About chances and odds.
- How to make good choices when things are unclear.
- Good sportsmanship and not giving up.
Backgammon mixes skill, math, and thinking about how people play, making it perfect for schools. The club sees a lot of potential for the game to grow starting with young players.
Casual Games in the City
Even with all the big games, Cape Town Backgammon still holds regular social evenings in the middle of Cape Town. These get-togethers are meant to be relaxed and open to everyone. They’re a great chance to:
- Meet new people.
- Learn how to play or get better at the game.
- Play friendly or competitive games in a nice setting.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a serious player or just starting out, these social nights are still the heart of the club.
A Friendly Group That Stays in Touch
Our group goes way beyond Cape Town. Through active WhatsApp groups, Cape Town Backgammon players connect with other South African backgammon players all over the country. They also link up with backgammon fans and players from around the world.
New members are always welcome, whether you want to learn the game, find regular games, or hope to play in national and international events.
Joining MSSA starts an exciting new chapter for Cape Town Backgammon. We look forward to making better paths for players, holding top-notch events, and continuing to grow a lively backgammon community in Cape Town and beyond.
