Not too long ago, I heard some disappointing news: my main shop partner for a long time, Kienda, was closing its doors at the end of March. They were a great help and really supported me in keeping this website going. It was a tough bit of news.
But, I always believe that when one opportunity ends, another one begins. This situation gave me a chance to think about what I wanted to do next. Having a shop partner is good because I get to see and talk about more games, you all get a place to buy games and find good deals, and the partner gets customers. It’s a good setup for everyone.
Thinking about all this, and seeing how much the board game scene is growing right here in Cornwall, I wanted to focus my efforts on this part of the country. I reached out to a really fantastic local group called Roll The Dice Cornwall. They are a Community Interest Company, which is a special type of business that focuses on helping the community. I’m very happy to share that we’ve agreed to work together, and from now on, Punchboard and Roll The Dice will be partners.
What is Roll The Dice?
Here’s how they describe themselves:
“Roll The Dice Cornwall C.I.C. is a Community Interest Company based in Helston, Cornwall. We use tabletop games to help people of all ages feel better, both socially and mentally.”
They have a shop and a place to play games in Helston, Cornwall. Plus, they organize lots of events, groups, and offer support.
Kids’ Gaming Club: A popular program is their free weekly gaming club for kids aged about 6 to 14, running when school is in session.
Help Through Play: Roll The Dice also runs programs using games to help with emotional and mental well-being in schools and other places.
Learning With Games: They work with teachers and parents to use board games as a way to help with learning, both in and out of school.
Games for Grown-ups and Everyone: They know games are good for adults too, so they have game nights every two weeks for adults, after-school sessions for home-schooled kids, and general meetups for the community.
Big Events: Besides the regular get-togethers, Roll The Dice puts on bigger events for the whole community.
They are all about the community first. This means they care more about people playing games together and getting help from their programs, rather than making a lot of money. That’s how they operate.
This idea makes me really happy. I love being able to team up with a group that’s more than just a store. They bring a lot of good things to the people in my local area.
If you live in the western or middle parts of Cornwall and enjoy games like Warhammer 40K or Bolt Action, role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, card games like Pokemon or Lorcana, or any other board and card games, you should definitely stop by and visit their shop.
What does this mean for you?
For you, the people reading my articles, not much will change. I’ll still be writing about new games, old games, small game companies, and games that are still being funded. If I write about a game that Roll The Dice sells, I’ll put a link to their store.
I want to mention that their prices are really good. They’re not just good compared to other local shops, but also when you look at prices online. I’ve told Dave, one of the people running Roll The Dice, that I don’t know how he keeps prices so low. He mentioned again that it’s not about making huge profits.
We’re hoping to have a system similar to the one I had with Kienda soon. This will mean extra savings for my readers who spend a certain amount at their store. I’ll share more details when I have them.
I’ll also be letting you know about their events when I can. I’m not getting paid to do this (they’ll give me a small amount of credit each month to buy games, but that’s it). I’m doing it because I truly believe in what they do, how they do it, and the good things it will bring to our local community.
I am absolutely thrilled to be working with Roll The Dice. They are a fantastic group of people doing important work, and I hope I can help them out in a small way.
For now, I really encourage you all to follow Roll The Dice on their social media and support everything they do.
A busy Sunday morning at the Roll The Dice shop in Helston, Cornwall.
