The gaming community has been buzzing nonstop since Larian Studios unveiled their new Divinity game at The Game Awards 2025. Even though there was some controversy regarding the potential use of generative AI and the subsequent decision to change course, the excitement for the next role-playing game from the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3 has not faded. In fact, the studio’s previous titles, specifically the 2023 hit Baldur’s Gate 3 and the classic Divinity: Original Sin 2, have seen a noticeable rise in popularity.
While Baldur’s Gate 3 has maintained a strong hold on the gaming world for the past couple of years, players took to social media on January 20th to point out that it is performing exceptionally well despite the release of new games and the presence of massive online titles like Arc Raiders. Larian’s CEO, Swen Vincke, who is also leading the development of the new Divinity game, quickly commented on the lasting appeal of their previous two games.
It is important to note that Vincke was discussing sales figures for both games, which do not always match the current concurrent player numbers we are seeing right now. Additionally, we only have direct access to data from Steam. However, considering that Larian’s games are currently on sale across all platforms and that Divinity: Original Sin 2 recently received a native port for the Nintendo Switch 2 along with upgrades for current-generation consoles, it is easy to believe that many players are finally diving into these massive RPGs now.
The developer also mentioned that the previous Divinity game has had its best month since its original launch back in 2017. This claim seems accurate when looking at the full picture, though we have to rely on Larian’s official statements. However, this surge does not align perfectly with SteamDB’s all-time chart data, which can be seen below.
The highest number of concurrent players for Divinity: Original Sin 2 after its launch was recorded in March 2020, right at the beginning of the Covid pandemic, when it reached 30,882 concurrent players. This current month, however, it achieved its best numbers since that peak, reaching 27,409 concurrent players.
Regarding Baldur’s Gate 3, its best post-launch moments occurred in January 2024 with 297,492 players and in April 2025 with 169,267 players. Currently, it sits at 127,254 concurrent players on Steam. Once again, the total player count across all platforms is likely much higher than these Steam-only figures.
As a side note, Larian has also stated that the studio will certainly consider a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Divinity: Original Sin 2. They are also looking into supporting the Steam Deck again after seeing the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 on Valve’s handheld PC.
