Dynasty Warriors: Origins Could Expand into a Trilogy, Producer Hints

Dynasty Warriors: Origins, which came out in 2025, just had its first birthday. The game was a big hit and brought a fresh feel to the long-running action series. Later this week, a new add-on called Visions of Four Heroes will be released, along with a version for the Nintendo Switch 2. In a recent chat, the producer, Tomohiko Sho, shared some exciting news about what could happen next.

We have known for a while that Origins sold very well. The company behind it, Koei Tecmo, said in February 2025 that the game sold over one million copies in its first month. Besides the new content and the Switch 2 version, many people think the developers are already planning a sequel. However, Sho recently shared in an interview that one follow-up game might not be enough to finish the story they want to tell.

The producer has been thinking about this for some time. He explained that he originally planned to make two games, a duology, to cover the story up to the Battle of Wuzhang Plains. But when the first game was finished, it covered the Battle of Chi Bi with much more detail than expected. Sho said that if they keep this level of detail, it would be impossible to reach the Battle of Wuzhang Plains in just one more game. Because of this, he started thinking they might need to make a trilogy instead.

Traditionally, Dynasty Warriors games cover a large part of the Chinese Three Kingdoms period. They usually start with the Yellow Turban Rebellion in the 180s and go all the way to the Battle of Wuzhang Plains in 234 AD. Some newer games even go further to tell the story of the Fall of Shu Kingdom in 264 AD. The games feature heroes and villains fighting against huge armies with various weapons, but at the heart of it, it is a massive historical drama.

With Origins, the main goal was to spend more time on each part of the big story. The game stops at the Battle of Chi Bi, which happened in 208 AD. The plan was to cover the rest of the period in just one sequel. But looking at how much content and story is packed into the game, it makes sense to support Sho’s idea of making two more games. Having two sequels instead of one would also let the developers improve the fighting system and the role-playing elements that were added to this version.

Sho also mentioned that he kindly wants people to buy the new DLC and play the main game. This suggests that a final decision has not been made yet. He is encouraging fans to show their support by playing, which might help decide the future of the series.
