Ryan Hurst, the Voice of Thor in God of War Ragnarök, Will Play Kratos in Amazon’s Live-Action Series

Amazon’s upcoming live-action series based on the popular video game God of War has finally announced who will play the main character. The actor chosen to portray Kratos is Ryan Hurst, a name that might sound familiar to fans of the game series.

Ryan Hurst has been selected to play Kratos in the new television show. This project is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Hurst has appeared in several live-action productions over the years. He is well-known for playing Gerry Bertier in the movie Remember the Titans and for his role as Opie Winston in the television series Sons of Anarchy. Interestingly, Hurst is not new to the world of God of War. In the 2022 video game God of War Ragnarök, he provided the voice and motion capture for the character Thor. His performance in that game was so impressive that it earned him a nomination for a BAFTA award.

The developers of the game series shared their excitement about this casting choice. They mentioned that they are eager to see how Hurst will interpret the character of Kratos. He joins the ranks of previous actors who have brought the character to life, specifically T.C. Carson and Christopher Judge. Both of these actors have played Kratos in earlier games and are remembered for their unforgettable performances.

Christopher Judge, who voiced Kratos in the 2018 God of War game and its sequel, also sent his congratulations to Hurst. Judge famously delivered the line “Boy!” in the games, which became one of the most memorable moments for fans. He wished Hurst good luck with a simple message: “You’re gonna be great… BOI !!!” accompanied by a heart emoji.

Regarding the plot of the series, it will follow the storyline established in the recent Norse-based games developed by Santa Monica Studio. The official description of the show explains the journey: “God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

Behind the camera, the production has secured a talented director. Last month, it was revealed that Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes of the series. Toye has an impressive resume, having worked on Amazon’s highly praised Fallout series and The Walking Dead. He also won an Emmy award in 2023 for outstanding directing for a drama series, which he received for his work on the ninth episode of Shōgun, titled “Crimson Sky.”

Toye is joining a production team led by showrunner Ronald D. Moore, who is a former executive producer of Battlestar Galactica. Moore’s involvement in the project is relatively recent. He only joined the production late in 2024. His arrival came after the original team working on the show departed, leading the series to reportedly start over from scratch.

As of now, there is no specific release window announced for the first season of the show. However, Amazon has already shown strong confidence in the project by greenlighting a second season. While fans wait for more news about the release date, there is still one major casting question left unanswered: who will play Atreus?
