Ubisoft has officially stated that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still an active project for the company. The game was first announced almost two decades ago, but the studio confirms it remains a priority. According to Ubisoft, this sequel fits perfectly with their strategy of focusing on open world adventure games.
This confirmation comes during a time of major changes at Ubisoft. Earlier this week, the company announced a significant reset of its organization and game portfolio. This reset resulted in the delay of seven projects, the closure of two studios, and the cancellation of several games. Despite these sweeping changes, Beyond Good and Evil 2 was not affected.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 was originally announced in 2008. The last time the public saw gameplay was during the E3 event in 2017, where it was shown as an open world title. A spokesperson for Ubisoft shared a statement regarding the game’s status. They said, “Beyond Good and Evil 2 remains part of our portfolio and our roadmap and fits with our strategy of focusing on Open World Adventures.”
The spokesperson further explained that within the current gaming market, the fantasy genre is not fully explored. Because of this, Ubisoft believes their sequel offers a unique proposition. They aim to provide something different compared to other open world games available today.
The journey to develop Beyond Good and Evil 2 has not been easy. However, there has been some progress in recent years. In 2024, the project received a new creative director to lead the team. The original creator of the series, Michel Ancel, previously commented on the development struggles. He mentioned that the issues arose because passionate managers were not getting along well with each other.
Last year, Ubisoft shared a job listing looking for a technical sound designer specifically for this game. This listing provided an updated description of what players can expect from the final product. The description reads: “Beyond Good and Evil 2 is an action-adventure open world game set in a captivating space opera universe and the direct prequel to the 2003 cult classic. Based on a breakthrough technology driven by the proprietary Voyager engine, Beyond Good and Evil 2 aims to offer a seamless experience of exploration and space piracy across a solar system full of exotic locations, colorful characters and mysteries to uncover, solo or with friends. So, if you are ready for an adventure like no other, come join forces with us to build System 3!”
While Beyond Good and Evil 2 survives the recent cuts, other projects were not so fortunate. The cancellations this week included the highly anticipated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. This remake was very close to release, with only a few months left until its planned launch date.
The development team behind the Prince of Persia remake expressed their disappointment regarding the cancellation. They noted that it was a difficult moment for both the fans and the staff. However, they clarified that this decision does not mean Ubisoft is abandoning the Prince of Persia franchise permanently. The company intends to continue supporting the series in the future.
