Theme in Games: Thinking Beyond Mechanisms Episode 24

Come on in!

Welcome to Ludology. This is a show where we talk about why board games work the way they do. We look at games from many angles. We cover their past, how they are made, and who plays them. We skip news and reviews.

We put out a new full show every two weeks. In those, Erica Bouyouris and Sen-Foong Lim dig deep into one part of making games. They often bring in a respected person from the game world. We stick mostly to table games like board games and role-playing games. But we also talk to folks from video games, escape rooms, and even slot machines.

On the off weeks, we share shorter shows. We are glad to say Sarah Shipp from Shippboard Games and Stephanie Campbell from TTRPGKids will help out for the next year. They will add extra talks between our big episodes.

Sarah’s part is called Thinking Beyond Mechanisms. It comes once a month. It looks closely at game parts other than dice and cards that we all know.

Stephanie’s part is TTRPGKids. It shows parents and teachers how to use role-playing games with kids at home or school.

We think you will like this extra stuff!

Our Story

Most Ludology shows stay fresh over time. Feel free to check our full list. The show began in 2011 with Geoff Engelstein and Ryan Sturm. Mike Fitzgerald replaced Ryan in 2015. Gil and Scott came on in 2017 when Mike left. Emma joined in 2019 after Geoff stopped hosting. Emma went in 2021, and Erica and Sen came aboard. Scott left in 2022. Gil will stop in 2023. Now Erica and Sen keep this great tradition going.

Erica and Sen want to add fresh voices to Ludology. They have good plans as more people get into games!

Ludology goes on thanks to folks like you who give support.

We have three First Listen series for Patrons. They get them early, before most listeners hear them.

  • The Memories that Made Us each month. These are stories of game times that shaped people who make today’s games.
  • Tales from the Designer Toolbox each month. Tips from pros based on wins and losses.
  • Ludology Live from game events around the world.

Patrons get first pick in any giveaways too!

Become a Ludology Patron.

You can give once or every month here. This goes to Erica’s spot. Sorry, but one-time givers do not get the Patron page.
