Dice Veggies: A Creative Dice Game with a Culinary Twist

I must admit, this game has a gimmicky feel to it, but it actually works quite well and definitely catches the eye. It is a very creative use of dice! In this game, the dice represent different cooking ingredients. There are five different colors, and each color stands for a specific ingredient. At the beginning of the game, you roll all the dice and arrange them randomly into a slab, just like the one shown in the picture below.

Players take turns using a cardboard cleaver to cut sections of dice off the main slab. This is how you gather the ingredients needed to cook various dishes. To be honest, using the cleaver can be a little troublesome. In our experience, we ended up mostly just using our fingers to pick up the dice.

When you carve sections off the slab, you are allowed to take as many dice as you want, provided the total value does not exceed 10. For example, looking at the photo above, you could take the three dice at the bottom right: the green 5, the beige 3, and the green 2. When you cleave a piece off, you cannot break the slab into two separate parts. It must be a proper straight cut, not a jagged line. Most of the time, you will be cutting one of the corners off the slab.

As more and more dice are cut away, the slab will eventually run out of one of the ingredient types. When this happens, the next player has the option to reroll all the dice. They will add the dice that have been used and discarded back into the pool to create a brand new slab for the game to continue.

You use the dice you collect to cook dishes. This follows a standard contract fulfillment mechanic. You have a special power token that allows you to change one die to a different value or a different color. This special power is refreshed every time the central slab is reset and a new one is created.

In addition to the basic dishes you can cook, there are optional special missions that can be attached to each dish. If you are able to fulfill these additional conditions, you score extra points for that dish.

This particular special mission works perfectly with the dish shown. It requires you to discard an extra mushroom, which is represented by a beige die. However, it scores 3 points for every mushroom included in the recipe, making it a valuable move if you have the right ingredients.

Overall, this is a pretty simple game and serves well for a casual audience. It might be a bit too simple for serious gamers, but it works perfectly as a family game for a fun evening.
