Diced Veggies: A Creative Dice Game with a Culinary Twist

I have to admit, this game feels a bit gimmicky at first glance, but it actually works quite well and definitely catches the eye. It is a fantastic example of using dice in a creative way. In this game, the dice are not just random numbers; they represent different cooking ingredients. There are five different colors, each standing for a specific type of food. To start the game, you roll all the dice and arrange them randomly into a single slab on the table. Players then take turns using a cardboard cleaver to cut sections of dice off this slab.

The dice in the game stand in for various ingredients you would find in a kitchen. They come in five distinct colors, representing five different food types. At the beginning of the game, you roll them all out and stack them into a pile or slab, just like the one shown in the picture. From there, players take turns using a cardboard cleaver to cut pieces of the dice off the main slab. This is how you gather the ingredients needed to cook different dishes. To be honest, using the cleaver can be a little tricky, so we mostly ended up using our fingers to move the dice.

When you carve a section off the slab, you are allowed to take as many dice as you want, provided the total value does not exceed 10. For instance, looking at the photo above, you could choose to take the three dice located at the bottom right: a green 5, a beige 3, and a green 2. When you cleave a piece off, you must ensure you do not break the slab into two separate piles. The cut must be a straight, proper line, not a jagged or uneven one. Most of the time, you will find yourself cutting off one of the corners of the slab.

As players continue to cut away dice, the slab will eventually run out of one of the specific ingredient types. When this happens, the next player has the option to reroll all the dice. They will add the dice that have been used and discarded back into the mix to create a fresh, new slab. This mechanic ensures the game keeps moving and ingredients remain available for everyone to collect.

You use the dice you have collected to “cook” dishes. This follows a standard contract fulfillment style of gameplay. You possess a special power token that allows you to change one die to a different value or a different color. This helpful power is refreshed every time the central slab is reset and a new one is created.

In addition to the basic dishes you can cook, there are optional special missions that can be attached to each recipe. If you manage to fulfill these additional conditions, you are rewarded with extra points. These missions add a layer of strategy to the otherwise casual gameplay.

This particular special mission works perfectly with the dish shown in the photo. It requires you to discard an extra mushroom (represented by a beige die), but in return, it scores you 3 points for every mushroom included in the recipe. It is a trade-off that can pay off well if you have the right dice.

Overall, this is a pretty simple game designed for a casual audience. It might be a bit too simple for serious gamers looking for deep strategy, but it works wonderfully as a family game to play with kids or non-gamers.
