Star Wars: Battle of Hoth Overview
You are familiar with the scene. It is snowy, and the Empire is closing in on a snowy rebel base. There is some camping out inside of a tauntaun. Only this time we are not sitting down to watch Empire Strikes Back again. We are getting in on the action and helping defend the Rebel Echo Base on Hoth. Unless you want to be leading the assault on Echo Base for the Empire. Because you can do that, too.
Battle of Hoth is a fast-paced two-player strategy miniatures game. Players choose a side to battle for and try to outthink and outmaneuver their opponent. Games are reasonably quick and can get very competitive. The dice-and-cards game system means that there are multiple possible strategies, many ways to go, and nearly endless potential for replayability.
This is also a game that strives to be immersive and enjoyable for long-time Star Wars fans. Tons of minis, chits, markers, and leader cards featuring your well-known characters will let players feel like they are part of the action. They will work alongside their favorite heroes or villains.
How to Play Star Wars: Battle of Hoth
First, players must select a battle from the scenario book. They set up the board, terrain, minis, and any extra badges, units, objectives, etc., accordingly. Players then take command and leader cards to coordinate with the side they chose to play as.
During a turn, players can take the following five moves in sequence. They will play a command card, order their units to move, attack, or take special actions, move units around the board, attack their opponent, and draw new command cards. Once the sequence of moves has been completed, any attacks have been resolved, players will collect any earned Victory Medals, and the next player will take their turn. Players alternate turns until the set number of Victor Medals has been won by one of the players, and the battle is won.
Should I Buy This Game?
There is a very specific intersection of a person who I would say absolutely should buy this game. If you are both a Star Wars fan and enjoy miniature-and-strategy board games, then yes. This is the game for you. This goes doubly so if you already know that you enjoy the Commands & Colors style games that Battle of Hoth uses as its core.
If that is not you, that is okay! You may still really enjoy this game! Or, you may enjoy a different Star Wars board game or a different miniatures-and-strategy board game. But if you, like me, enjoy spending a little time in a galaxy far far away, minis, and getting very competitive with a friend, Battle of Hoth is a very fun time.
