Underdog Team Oblivion Makes History with ALGS Year 5 Championship Win

In a stunning finish that felt like a storybook ending, the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS) Year 5 Championship in Sapporo, Japan, saw an unexpected winner. The underdog team Oblivion, competing without an organization, emerged victorious. They sealed the deal with a dramatic match point in a marathon of nine intense games.

The Canadian trio consisting of ‘Blinkzr’, ‘Monsoon’, and ‘FunFPS’ took home the top prize of $600,000 from a total prize pool of $2 million. This victory etched their names into ALGS history as champions.

Oblivion’s Journey to the Top

Oblivion was formed in September 2025 as an orgless team, meaning they had no backing from a professional gaming organization. Despite this, the players brought impressive resumes to the table. Monsoon, a fan favorite, has a legendary backstory of rising from homelessness. He is famous for a memorable Kraber sniper shot on the streamer Shroud and has previously represented teams like FlyQuest and Complexity.

Another member, FunFPS, has been competing professionally since 2019. He has had stints with major teams such as NRG, XSET, and Team Liquid. The third player, Blinkzr, was looking for redemption after a disappointing 36th place finish in Year 4. He had previously teamed up with FunFPS at Movistar KOI.

The team earned their spot at the live event by dominating the Americas Last Chance Qualifiers in October 2025. However, their path wasn’t entirely smooth. They had a shaky group stage performance, placing 19th out of 40 teams. This sent them to the lower bracket round 2, a dangerous position. But they fought back with grit, securing a third-place run in the bracket that propelled them to the finals.

How the Finals Played Out

The finals were chaotic and thrilling. Ten teams reached the Match Point eligibility threshold of 50 points across the nine games played. The finale took place on the Storm Point map, turning into pure chaos as teams battled for survival. Oblivion fortified a position known as The Pylon using Wattson fences. They survived until they were the last eligible squad standing.

The final moments were nail-biting, featuring a three-way standoff between Oblivion, Supernova, and Hotdog Mafia. Oblivion executed a daring endgame push, securing 13 kills. This performance clinched them a total of 86 points, securing the championship title.

Early frontrunners like Team Falcons showed promise but ultimately faltered. They started strong with a 14-kill chicken dinner in Game 1 on Storm Point and finished as runners-up in Game 2 on Olympus. By the end of the early games, they had 75 points. However, they crashed out in 13th place during the decider match after losing their star player, ‘ImperialHal’. Other notable teams like ENTER FORCE.36 nearly stole the win in Game 8 but fell to Virtus.pro. Teams such as GROW Gaming, S8UL Esports, Crazy Thieves, TSM, Ninjas in Pyjamas, Fnatic, and UNLIMIT also contended fiercely throughout the event.

Final Standings (Top 6)

  • 1st: Oblivion – 86 points ($600,000 prize)
  • 2nd: Team Falcons – 75 points
  • 3rd: ENTER FORCE.36 – (Tiebreakers)
  • 4th: GROW Gaming
  • 5th: S8UL Esports
  • 6th: Crazy Thieves

Oblivion’s triumph marks a significant moment for orgless squads in the Apex Legends scene. It proves that heart, hustle, and raw talent can topple even the biggest giants in the industry.
